Student Literacy Technology Standards 4.A.1.b
Standard 4: Technology for Communication and Expression A: Communication

b. Present information independently to various audiences 4.B.1.a
Standard 4: Technology for Communication and Expression
B: Expression
1. Use and Understand how Technology can be used to express ideas
a. Select and use appropriate multimedia and publishing tools to express original ideas
The following PowerPoint Presentation will depict students using the ELMO to display work samples and other uses of technology during in-class presentations. During these presentations students are able to comment and identify common misconceptions presented in a variety of ways by their peers. These unique opportunities enhance their ability to think critically and analytically, as they question their peers’ specific reasoning for methods used to solve problems. The ELMO also enables students the ability to notice diverse approaches to solving problems; as well, identifying where they can be of assistance to peers and aid in finding different ways to find solutions. Additionally, the PowerPoint Presentation will include students working collaboratively to complete performance tasks modified to meet the varying learning modalities of students in the class. Overall, using the ELMO with students, specifically students with Individualized Educational Plans really enables the student’s ability to visually organize complex information, recognize patterns, draw inferences, and communicate findings, verbally, visually, and kinesthetically. Studies have proven that students using varying forms of technology in the classroom “develop higher-order mathematical thinking by making abstract ideas concrete” (Gardner, 1983).
As a result of the ELMO for instructional use, I am able to show students that are unfamiliar or lack experience with using the features of a calculator to enhance their learning by providing opportunities for them to be successful. Additionally, the ELMO allows me to observe students working in the classroom, even while I am servicing or conferencing with other students simultaneously. ELMO allows me to capture examples of student work, as well as enable other students to visually get an exact picture of how their peers use varied approaches to finding solutions to the same problems. Students that present their work using the ELMO are eager to share and participate in class discussions. The ELMO has also been extremely helpful in showing work samples in color or coded to identify patterns. Moreover, ELMO allows me to point out specific needs to address in analyzing student work in department meetings or with our Instructional Math Coach. Being able to capture the learning environment as instruction.
I absolutely love having the ELMO as a part of my instructional strategies! Every teacher should have this technology…..it completely transforms the way I teach and the way my students learn!
Howard Gardner, Professor of Harvard University and author of Frames of Mind (New York: Basic Books, 1983) from Multimedia Book, ITTE wrote that:
Seven or more "multiple intelligences" that are of equal importance in human beings and develop at different times and in different ways in different individuals.
Multi-media can go along way to addressing these intelligences, much more than traditional teaching methods.
